2019 BUYER’S GUIDE

Bouldering • Bouldering season in Canada often starts before roped climbing and can stretch late into the fall. Whether you only have a few hours or all day, bouldering is a fun and social way to get a pump on the stone. You don’t need as much gear as you do for cragging, so that means the gear you do use should be the best fit for the task; here’s some tried-and-true – and some new – for 2019.

Gym Climbing • Most climbers head to the gym year-round nowadays, so having cool clothes for the commute there and the session is key in the spring and summer. Here’s some new gear for 2019 gym climbers.

Sport Climbing • Most climbers start in a gym and progress outdoors to toproping and sport climbing. A few pieces of advice if this is your first season of sport climbing: learn about lead climbing outdoors, learn about rappelling and lowering off anchors and bring a bolt hanger and wrench in case you come across a bolt stud missing a hanger. And always wear a helmet, even on those steep routes. Here’s some must-have gear for cragging this year.

Trad Climbing • Trad climbing skills can take you to places on the rock reserved for those with gear-placing skills away from bolted lines. Having the best gear for the job can be the difference between clipping the chains and taking a whipper on an awkwardly placed, old cam. Do yourself a favour and grab some new gear before heading to that sexy splitter.

Van Life • Not everyone is going to spend time this year camping and travelling to remote areas to rock climb, but those who will should have the best gear for the trip. Here are some must-haves for 2019.
