The 2020 International Quilt Show Dubai • The International Quilt Show Dubai has been held every two years since its inaugural event in 2008. It is the brainchild of Mala and Shanker Ramakrishnan, who opened the first quilt shop in Dubai, Classic Quilts, in 2006, when quiltmaking was largely unheard of in that part of the world. This year’s show featured a judged competition with eight categories and a series of workshops, including a number conducted by the Tentmakers of Cairo.

Block Masterclass • A traditional Cathedral Window quilt had a unique construction method — it had no borders, no backing fabric, no layering and no batting. Instead, it was constructed of squares of plain fabrics (such as calico or muslin) that were folded into several layers and sewn together by hand. Onto this base, the ‘windows’ of printed fabrics were placed, and the bias edges of the folded base were rolled back over the print fabrics and stitched by hand to make curved frames.
