HOPE FOR THE FUTURE • Season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery sends the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery far into the future – 930 years beyond the 23rd-Century setting of the first two seasons, to be precise. What awaits Discovery in this brave new era remains to be seen as the third season unfolds, but for star Sonequa Martin-Green, the shift in time and place represents a welcome leap forward, both for the show and for her character, Michael Burnham.
LET’S TALK ABOUT DECKS • Not only are we in the midst of a new golden age of Star Trek, we’re also in the midst of a new golden age of Star Trek animation. Following on from the Star Trek: Short Treks “Ephraim and Dot” and “The Girl Who Made the Stars,” Star Trek: Lower Decks marks the first major return to the form since Star Trek: The Animated Series in the mid-1970s. ALL AHEAD FULL! • The U.S.S. Discovery’s 930-year leap into the far future isn’t the first time the various crews of Star Trek have had a glimpse beyond the 24th Century. In fact, many times the future has come to them, as Yesterday’s Enterprise details.

DEEP SPACE DYSTOPIA • Fictional dystopias have been much discussed of late – for obvious reasons – but as a hopeful vision of the future, Star Trek couldn’t really be categorized as such. Or could it…? Both Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Discovery have dallied with dystopian scenarios – the latter seemingly doing so again in its forthcoming far-flung-future-set third season – and previous
THE SCIENCE OF STAMETS • A noted science fiction fan, Anthony Rapp is in his element playing Paul Stamets on Star Trek: Discovery, reveling in the show’s marriage of cutting-edge real science and high-concept storytelling. But just as important to him as the sci-fi is the authenticity of his character, whether that be how Stamets has changed as he heads into Season 3, or his relationship with Hugh Culber.
DOCTOR HUGH • It’s been quite the roller coaster for Star Trek: Discovery’s Hugh Culber. Over the course of Seasons 1 and 2, the U.S.S. Discovery’s doctor has been killed, regenerated, estranged from his lover, Paul Stamets, and finally reunited with him. And yet with all that, the third season’s jaunt to the far future represents perhaps the biggest challenge yet, both for Culber and for the man who plays him, Wilson...
