CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY • Tim Burton’s 2005 film, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, is a showcase of quirkly design, epitomized by the Bucket family home. For this diorama I decided to scratchbuild the house Charlie shares with Grandpa Joe and the rest of the Buckets in 1/35 scale. AK Interactive 8mm carving foam (AK8095) was the perfect material for this project because it can be easily carved and shaped with the dedicated tools the company offers
TRANSFORMERS • The animated Transformers TV show was one of my favorite crartoons when I was young. So, you can imagine my excitement when the first live-action movie was released. I’ve always wanted to model a Transformer with a human-like silhouette. But even after I got the idea for this one, I wasn’t aware this build would be the one. A Fujimi 1/24 scale Lamborghini Veneno kit on the shelf turned out to be a good candidate to be a robot. Windering how to turn it into a robot, I made an extensive list of all of the changes I would need to make. I planned to use most of the bodywork, tires, and some of the clear parts; the rest would be scratchbuilt. The last thing I did before starting work on the Transformer proper was to cut into an important part of the Veneno so there would be no going back!
TITANIC THE MOVIE • The drama of the Titanic and its sinking during its maiden voyage is well known and a lot has been written about it over the subsequent century. The disaster has also been the subject of several films, including James Cameron 1997 film. State-of-the-art film making and computer graphics combined to make it one of the most striking versions of the story to date. Stars Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet smoothly blended a gentle love story with the epic disaster and the tragic aftermath of the incident. Rather than re-create a scene from the movie, I decided model a moment on the set and pay tribute to the many films made about the ill-fated liner.
