When the Sun and the Moon meet Solar Eclipse • A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, blocking the Sun’s rays from reaching the Earth. The shadow of the Moon follows a different path across the Earth at each eclipse. The umbra is the region where a total eclipse is seen, and the penumbra is the area where a partial eclipse of the Sun is seen. Here on Earth, we can experience two kinds of eclipses: solar eclipses and lunar eclipses.
