LES DESIGNERS
LES CONTEURS ENCHΑNTÉS • Replete with historical, stylistic and poetic references, often highly personal, these designers’ creations appeal to our inner child, always eager for another fairy tale. Whether tables, chairs or consoles, they are often part of a set, a whole in which each part stands alone or with the others, forming a unified esthetic realm. Jaime Hayón’s fanciful theater, Sabine Marcelis’s effusions of color, the harmonious symphony composed by Apparatus… Each is an invitation to enter a singular creative universe.
LES VALEURS SÛRES • If any designers can be called “bankable,” they are the ones. Heading large studios, in most cases launched in the early 2000s, they create bestsellers that keep them busy with commissions from the major furniture houses. In parallel, many are also consultants or art directors for a specific brand, like Patricia Urquiola for Cassina, Piero Lissoni for Living Divani, Rodolfo Dordoni for Minotti… Herewith, our selection of today’s top 12 designers, the talents who define the style of their era.
LES CHАΜРIONS DE LA LIGNE • The unifying element in their work is the line: the supple strokes of the pencil that delineate the contours of creations anchored in the present but reflecting historic influences—art deco, modernism, often with a tinge of the 1970s. The tubular chair by Atelier de Troupe, Margaux Keller’s mirror or Pool’s curvaceous overstuffed chair, Victoria Wilmotte’s colorful objects, the graphic-neoclassic sideboard by AC/AL… They all evince a disciplined devotion to drawing.
ARTISΤES ET DESIGNERS • Elena Salmistraro started out as an illustrator, Hervé Van der Straeten went to art school, Floris Wubben is a ceramist… They all create household objects, but their artistic backgrounds give these designers a unique approach, closely linked to their own personalities and based on the free (or in some cases unchained—see the Haas Brothers) expression of the inner self.
LES DÉFENSEURS DU CHIC CALME • They have a preference for the natural. Wood, stone, cork and wool provide their materials—and their color palettes. For these designers, the spare, chic lines that define the forms of their creations are the best way to play up the qualities of the chosen material. Christophe Delcourt works like a sculptor, Jasper Morrison embraces minimalism, Raphael Navot tells stories… They all have their own way of devising a balanced composition, a harmony much appreciated by the future owners of their furniture.
