THE BROTHERS CAMPAIGNING AGAINST COERCIVE CONTROL • White Ribbon Day – a nationwide movement dedicated to the eradication of violence against women and girls – falls on 25 November. Shocking statistics show that domestic abuse will impact one in four women in their lifetime and, on average, two women a week are murdered by current or ex-partners in the UK. One aspect of domestic abuse which is often overlooked or misunderstood is coercive control, which became a crime in 2015, although prosecutions remain low. Coercive control involves systematic, manipulative behaviour designed to isolate, degrade and delude the victim. This, not physical violence, is the strongest predicting factor for domestic violence leading to murder. Here, Closer talks to Luke Hart, whose father murdered his mother and sister following decades of coercive control.
