Letters to the Editor

Down with skool

Athena • Cultural Crusader

My favourite painting Bill Sherman

A very English house • Combining an Arts-and-Crafts ethos with inventive planning and new building materials, this remarkable house offers a fascinating insight into the tastes of the Edwardian architect who created it, as Jeremy Musson explains

The legacy • John Christie and Glyndebourne

Madeleine, my madeleine • Certain tastes will forever have the capacity to transport us back in time. Tom Parker Bowles reflects on his own nostalgia foods and Katy Birchall asks friends of COUNTRY LIFE about their personal Proustian moments

The Season • Our dos and don’ts to ensure a sizzling social round

If you know, you know • It’s all very well booking the tickets and getting the outfit, but there’s nothing worse than gazing longingly at next door’s roaring picnic. Fear not, as Madeleine Silver is here with all the insider tips, ready for you to ace the Season ahead

Hitting the sweet spot • Tennis is about so much more than the score, suggests Deborah Nicholls-Lee, as she revels in the ‘pop-pop’ of a rally and the zesty scent of freshly mown courts

All the trimmings • When it comes to dressing for the Season, accessories will transform an outfit. Ginnie Chadwyck-Healey and Tom Chamberlin, both stylish summer-party veterans, offer some sage advice

Timed to perfection • Nick Foulkes finds the chronograph watch quite at home throughout the Season, from clocking the fastest at the finishing line to tottering through Champagne-drenched enclosures

Anyone for Pimm’s? • Navigating the Season is unthinkable without a long, cool glass of Pimm’s, says Flora Watkins, but this quintessentially British refreshment must be well dressed

Luxury Notebook

A few of my favourite things • The Newmarket-born presenter of ITV Racing is often referred to as the face of Royal Ascot and is the daughter of leading racehorse trainer Luca Cumani. Francesca resides in rural Yorkshire, where she breeds horses, with her husband, Max, and three children, Harry, Teddy and Nina.

A sparkling spread • Put some extra glamour into your picnic this season

A room for all seasons • Interior designer Isabella Worsley reveals her plans for COUNTRY LIFE’s stand at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, which revives the tradition of the Italian loggia with an English country-house flavour

Grapes and rebels • Two fine Essex properties reflect the county’s celebrated history, as a third flies the flag for English wine

It’s a family affair • Close enough to London, yet with rolling hills and historic towns,...
