Prayer in the morning

Gospel canticles • The gospel canticles (or “songs”) come from Luke’s gospel. In honor of the mystery of the Incarnation (to which all three refer), it is customary to make the sign of the cross as the canticle begins and to stand while it is sung.

Politics and religion

"Hope does not disappoint" • Pope Francis, in preparation for the Church’s 2025 Jubilee Year of Hope, released the Papal Bull titled Spes Non Confundit last May. That phrase is from Romans 5:5 and, translated into English, means “Hope does not disappoint.” The lengthy document is designed to encourage Catholics around the world to celebrate the Jubilee Year, which began in December and will run through the end of the liturgical year in November.

Meet your grace • Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton (1774-1821) was the first native-born saint of the United States. Her feast day is celebrated this month on January 4. For more on her life, see page 24. These excerpts from Mother Seton’s writings reveal her warm and practical spiritual advice.

Tell the good news first • Find a quiet spot to read, reflect, and pray. You may record your thoughts in a prayer journal, or share your responses with others in a group.
